Adam Smith (1723-1790), author of The Theory of Moral Sentiments and The
Wealth of Nations is buried in the churchyard of Canongate Kirk in
Edinburgh. His tomb is against the back wall of the Canongate
Tolbooth.
The new Caithness slab in front of the
memorial carries the beginning of this quote from The Wealth of Nations: "The
property which every man has in his own labour; as it is the original
foundation of all other property, so it is the most sacred and inviolable
... To hinder him from employing this strength and dexterity in what
manner he thinks proper without injury to his neighbour is a plain
violation of this most sacred property."

against the back of which stands Adam Smith's tomb. He lived nearby in Panmure House from
1778 until his death in 1790. The house is in Panmure Close slightly
further down the Canongate from the Tolbooth. The house is late 17th century, L-plan with
crowstepped gables.
