The grave of William H. Playfair (1790-1857) in Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh. He was one of the leading architects during the later stages of the New Town development in Edinburgh. Examples of his work are a number of streets in the third phase of the New Town, the art galleries on The Mound (see New Town page), St Stephen's Church, Dugald Stewart's monument on Calton Hill, the completion of the University Old College. He also designed the National Monument on Calton Hill, Regent Terrace and Royal Terrace on the sides of the hill, and several other buildings in Edinburgh.

He had a practice in 17 Great Stuart Street (middle house below), although this part of the town was designed by James Gillespie Graham.
